I havent bought a console since PS2 first came out, basically ive decided i want to get a new one, but not sure which would be more reliable.

Out of the 2 i would prefer to get the 360 but ive read on a lot of sites that they have problems with a red ring of death or somethin ? And PS3 seems a lot more expensive and control pads apparantly fail a lot .

advice please .

shouldnt it be more based on what they can do? and what games they have?
i mean these things sell in the millions... no matter which it is - they are going to have some that go wrong. i dont think buying a console shouldnt be based on number that have gone wrong..else you would end up getting a wii lol

i want to know what is more reliable . which one is less likely to break down on me after only a couple of weeks play . i already know what games i would buy and they are available on both. ive already read many reviews about game play etc .

i dont mean to sound like an arsehole but i think you may be missing the point of my question :) im just trying to find out if they ( mainly 360 ) break down as much as im led to believe .

If you get a new Xbox you shouldn't have any problems with the "red ring". I bought mine a few years ago now, well after everybody had this issue, and mine's still going strong. If i could choose which one to get now i'd go for the PS3. The only reasons being; online play is free for PS3, whereas you have to pay about 35.00 for Xbox live. I never used to bother about online- bunch of geeks sitting in there darkened bedrooms girlfreind-less chatting away on their little headsets - but COD online is brilliant, i'm actually considering shelling out the money just to play it. Also a mate has told me, whether or not it's true, the graphics on the PS3 are much better than Xbox and you can play blue-ray films on a PS3. I'd go for the PS3 personally.

EDIT

Just read your second post, see you're going for reliabilty over features. As i say i've never had any problems with my Xbox but i know some have, again as i say mine is newer than those who encountered problems. As for PS3, for what it's worth, i've never heard of anyone having issues. My brother's is still working fine as is my mates, other than that i don't really know too much about their (PS3's) reliability, sorry.

PS3 has Blu-Ray and free online.

360 has $36 USD for a year (I'm actually pretty sure it has 13 months though). I have an Xbox 360 and I love it. I have gone through about 3 Xboxes though, for various uncontrollable reasons, but only once have I lost it to the Red Ring of Death, and then it was still under warranty.

As for graphics, its pretty on an HD TV, as it should be. Games, much more choice, a lot of Xbox-specific titles, whereas PS3 has very few console-only titles.

However it all boils down to what kind of gamer you are, casual, or more into it. PS3 would be for more casual gamers in my opinion, because the online is free and customers aren't as pressed to get the most out of online play as possible, whereas Xbox would be for more dedicated gamers for that same reason.

So, you're choice. ^^
If you do choose Xbox 360 I recommend the Elite for the Hard Drive, and a warranty. If it breaks out of warranty, buy an Arcade and just slap the 120 GB Hard Drive on there.

have both and I like both for different reasons.

I'm on my second 360 and still have my release day 20 gig ps3 (now with a 250 gig though =P)

ps3 gamers are more casual? somebody hasn't played mag =P and the exclusives for the ps3 this year kick the crap out of most everything exclusive to the 360.

yes live is an excellent online experience however it's also filled with a lot of very immature @ssholes who just say stupid shit to get a rise.

I only have the PS3 so I can't tell you which is the best from experience, but someone who knows more about this stuff told me that the 360 is more fragile than the PS3. You shouldn't be very rough on either of them of course. Don't know what the fuzz about the PS3 controller is about though, never had any problems with mine.

And yes, like meathead says, it's all about MW2 online :p I don't play with a headset, though.

I've had 3 360's and 3 PS3's so in terms of reliability i don't see much difference. Much has been made of reliability issues with the 360 but the service and care under warranty (and often out of warranty) makes up for it. The early PS3 controllers did seem a bit flimsy and lightweight but only replaced mine when Dualshock 3 was introduced.

I'd go for the PS3 as an overall choice due to the ease of use, free online play and Blu ray DVD. If you're not interested in online might as well get a 360.

I've used both quite extensively. The PS3 certainly has more power but it doesn't always seem to get used properly, especially on multi platform games. As an example GTA4 looks much better on the 360 and seems glitchy in places on the PS3 as well. I guess a lot of these games are designed with the weaker console in mind for obvious reasons.

PS3 does have some killer exclusives and the free web is nice but I hear a rumour they are going to start charging? Don't know how much truth is in that but could be worth looking into before making your choice.

I've had two 360's break on me and am now on my 3rd. :-/ This time I've got one of the newer ones though and supposedly there isn't a probelm with them! It's pretty shit though. Not even my spectrum, NES, Master System etc have broke and I've had them most of my life.

My boys have one of each, and they play them 24/7 when not at school. Both are online and they've had the ps3 for about 2 years now, the xbox 360 since xmas. The ps3 is still going strong apart from obvious wear and tear and replacement controllers to upgrade. The xbox 360 elite, was a bargain but tbh, i had trouble with the headset as soon as he opened it. Had to get a replacement which was covered as i bought insurance with it. Seems to be okay atm but, its still early days.

I don't play them, tried nazi zombies and died more times than i shot anything lol After having a go at both tho, i much prefer the ps3, as has been already pointed out, its free to go online and its already wireless enabled, but the xbox wireless adaptor cost like an extra 60 :/

First I'd like to start off with:

They're going to charge for a "premium" service, where you unlock more things to do. But, you'll still be charged nothing to play online for free, that's not changing. That's one of their major selling points in the market, they wouldn't get rid of that.

~

Now I don't own a 360 anymore after it failing on me once, but I did have both systems at once. Also I like to think I know a little bit considering I worked at Gamestop for well over a year, and had to answer questions all the time. I currently own a 40GB PS3 'phat' version.

The 360 is a good system, but I hate Microsoft with a passion for being so money hungry. The system is great, and I love the controller over the PS3's to be honest. It's big, but it also takes up your entire hand so you're not left with open gaps, which is good and bad. Xbox Live seems to a little more stable compared to the PSN, but one thing I do like is Microsoft controls their own servers for their games, at least the big ones like MW2. Which means when they mean no cheating, they mean no mother ****ing cheating. They ban people constantly, and ban their Live accounts, and even lock people's 360s so they can't be used to play online ever again.

That's good and bad, considering most people just sell it to some poor sap that can't play online with it. But, the community I've faced on Live is just terrible, just terrible. I won't say it's more "online geared", because they're really not, but most of the people on there are always screaming at each other. It's hard to even be in a group with your friends with other people in the room. Which, sadly, most are under the age of 15 with high voices, screaming left and right saying the N-word. Gets pretty annoying, imo. The system itself runs great though, and the RROD isn't a problem if you get a new system with the I think.. Falcon? Chipset. But the new thing it the E85 error, or something of the sort. Best to get a warranty, and like someone else said, get the elite.

~

PS3 is more bang for your buck, since you get more than the 360 Elite for the same price. Now with the new slim, you get a large HDD (120GB is a shit ton of memory for a console, don't let anyone fool you otherwise), a Blu-Ray/DVD player, free online, free built in wireless, an internet browser that's built in, backwards compatibility with PSOne games (no PS2 sadly), and on the phat versions you can download and install an OS onto it. From first hand experience I can tell you the PS3 runs great, honestly is more powerful (8 SPE'S, one is redundant in case on of the others fail), and from an HDTV perspective looks AMAZING. More so than the 360, albeit it still looks good, the PS3 looks better, imo.

It's also good to mention to get wireless on the 360 you're shelling out another $60+ the last time I checked. And that's for the weaker version of the adapter for the wireless.

Now don't let anyone fool you here, either, PSN is great. I've never had a connection problem despite where I hear other people saying they do. The only time my connection downs itself is when someone is downloading something and I promptly kick their ass off the computer, or the host I'm connected too has a shit connection. And at that point I'm not the only one with a terrible lag in the room, everyone is lagging. Wireless is good too, and the only problem I ever had with it was being in the basement (stone walls) with the Router upstairs. I advise going hard lined though, use an Ethernet, it's just more stable and nothing can interfere with the connection. If it starts failing you know it's either your router you're plugged into, the host, or your internet itself. I've faced many GREAT players on PS3, the 360 isn't "better for online play", that's just being arrogant.

Also on a little note I had the original 60GB PS3 since release, I paid the original $600 for it. The thing lasted me until December last year. The ONLY problems I had with it was 1) HDD failure due to someone being stupid and turning the system off during saving. 2) A component on it finally failed due to multiple droppings. This is after 2+ years! An INITIAL release like the 360, and it lasted that long after multiple power outages while loading, multiple droppings while moving (stupid people don't know how to carry it), and multiple over heatings before I got a dedicated fan on it.

Hope this helped somewhat in your decision.

i love how you come and ask for advice, and the general consensus is a ps3 and you go for a 360 lol. Why bother asking if you had already made up your mind?
