Yes but these are big record companies, ones that actually exist still. The stuff Fingaz has mentioned was released on some tiny label ran probably by 2 people that ceased to exist a long time ago, and as such, who the hell is going to taken legal action in the almost impossible event that they actually did find out.

I'm guessing that would be the CD case with all the technical stuff inside. Makes sense to me.
i clicked on the bottom part that said blog and the first thing on that list was BearSharePro!! lol i wonder who's going to be falling for that trap!?!?!

Agreed. Although I took that as he already knows that, so I do think it's more of a morale issue.

In the US I think it's completely legal to download things you already own.

Illegal yes, if you've lost the original CD for whatever reason you've lost the right to own any other copy of it.

Then is copying from a CD for back-up purposes illegal as well?

Such straightforward answers. Might as well keep my cds in mint condition till the end of time and keep my files in a place that's immune to hardware failure/corruption.

Strike my last post it IS illegal to download even if you purchased the physical form. In the US.
Addressing the ripping topic, it IS illegal to rip CDs if you own them, even legally for back-up purposes. The reason Windows Media Player has them is because it is not illegal to OWN a ripper. More mainstream music has DRM to ensure that this doesn't happen.
If Hardcore producers ever start DRM protecting their stuff though... man.

So backup/copy the CD to MP3 player, then destroy CD?
That way you legally only have 1 copy of said music.
BTW, why would MP3 players not all be DRM locked if it was illegal to rip a CD and put them on MP3 players?

I know for ROMs for emulators like Genesis, NES, N64 . . . if you own the cartridge, you can download and play the ROM.
Really, its a "grey area" that has yet to be officially (legally) dealt with in most countries as I can tell.

So, if copying from a CD to Computer for backup purposes is illegal, then why did CD/DVD manufactures make it so they could rip data?
Don't you think government bodies would have made it a law if that were the case?

Destroying a CD would be stupid to just say you only have one copy of music.
I already addressed the Rip function in my last post.

the dead record label thing/song thing afaik - that song/cd will go into the public domain 50 years after the copywrite is not renewed (by uk laws)
so eventually that kind of thing wont be illegal
personally, i think the 50 years thing is a little steep, but i guess its to give the original artist time to kick the bucket so they cant just complain when everybody starts throwing thier music round for free
